Pinstriping Designs: Ideas to Try on Your Car Before You Paint
Pinstriping is very thin painted lines that outline body lines or form symmetrical scrolls. Browse common designs and placements, see two examples, then upload a photo of your car and preview a design before a striper starts work.

Two classics, plain paint to pinstriping
Each pair is one AI-drawn before photo and that photo after one Modification Goals request, sent through the same image model, step count and request wording that Custom Vision uses. Each after-image is a single run, and where we reran a request the caption says so. The full request text sits under each pair.

All before and after images are AI-drawn samples from our own image model, not photos of real customer vehicles. The vehicles are plain generic models with no plate text. Under each pair we list which parts of the request worked, which did not, and any change we never asked for.
Pinstriping, in short
A pinstripe is a line only a few millimeters wide. Stripers use it two ways: to trace and sharpen a body line, or to build a symmetrical design of scrolls and flourishes, usually on the hood or trunk. Contrast does the work, which is why dark cars are the favorite canvas.
The vehicles below are AI-drawn generic models, not photos of real customer vehicles, and no vehicle maker is affiliated with this page.
Pinstriping designs to try
Body-line stripe
One or two thin lines along the main body line from front to back.
Hood scrollwork
A symmetrical design of scrolls and teardrops at the hood center.
Trunk lid design
A smaller mirror of the hood design on the trunk.
Outlined flames and scallops
Thin lines that outline painted flames or scallops.
Wheel well outlines
A single line that follows each wheel arch.
Accent spots
Small designs below the headlights, on the dash or on the tailgate.
Classic color pairs
- Gold, red, white or teal on black.
- Gold or white on dark blue.
- Black or red on cream or white.
- Two colors together, such as red with a white outline.
How to preview a pinstripe design on your car
- 1
Take a clear photo
A front three-quarter photo shows the hood and doors.
- 2
Open the Modifications tool
Upload the photo and switch to Custom Vision.
- 3
Describe the design
Name the color, the design and where it goes, and say that the paint and the rest of the car stay the same.
- 4
Show it to your striper
Use the render to agree on the style and placement. A hand striper will draw the real design.
Two Modification Goals to paste
We used these requests for the examples. Copy one into Modification Goals and change the colors and placement for your own car.
- Change ONLY the paint details: add thin hand-painted pinstriping in red and white, with symmetrical scrolls and teardrop flourishes on the hood and thin lines along the doors; keep the black paint, wheels, chrome, body shape, background and camera angle exactly the same
- Change ONLY the paint details: add thin hand-painted gold pinstriping with symmetrical scrolls on the hood and a thin line along the body sides and doors; keep the blue paint, wheels, chrome, body shape, background and camera angle exactly the same
What the AI does well and where it slips
Hood designs come out clearly and in the colors you name. Long thin lines along the doors are the weak spot: in both of our runs they did not appear, and the scrolls came out bolder than a hand striper would paint them. Ask for one placement per run and use the render as a style guide, not a stencil.
Frequently asked questions
What is pinstriping?
Very thin lines of paint or vinyl tape that outline a car body line or form an ornamental design. It started on horse-drawn carriages and early cars, and 1950s hot rod and custom builders turned it into free-form, symmetrical art.
Hand-painted or pinstripe tape?
Tape is cheap, easy to lay and removable. Hand-painted striping lasts longer and is real artwork, but it needs a skilled striper. A tape seller rates standard tape at 3 to 5 years and cast film longer; treat those as seller estimates.
What paint do pinstripers use?
Mostly a slow-drying, oil-based lettering enamel, which lets the striper pull a long line before the paint gets tacky.
Where does pinstriping usually go?
Hood center, trunk lid, along the beltline, around the wheel wells, below the headlights and on the dash. Single or double lines often follow the main body line.
Can you clear-coat over pinstriping?
Yes, once the enamel has fully cured, which one striping supplier puts at 24 to 72 hours. Lay a light first coat.
Can pinstripes be removed?
Tape comes off with gentle heat and adhesive remover. Painted stripes need solvent and polishing and can leave a faint ghost line.
Can I preview a pinstripe design on my car for free?
Yes. Sign in with email or Google, upload a photo of your car in the Modifications tool and paste a goal like the ones below into Modification Goals in Custom Vision. Most new accounts get 5 free credits that last 30 days, and a standard render uses 1 credit. Free renders carry a WheelAI watermark.
