Tailgate Wrap: See a Design on Your Own Tailgate

A tailgate wrap is a printed vinyl panel that covers only the flat face of your tailgate, from a mountain sunset to a topo map, a flag or camo. See two designs on two example trucks, then upload a photo of your tailgate and try your own idea before you order a print.

Two tailgates, plain paint to a printed wrap

Each pair is one AI-drawn before photo and that photo after one Modification Goals request, sent through the same image model, step count and request wording that Custom Vision uses. Each after-image is a single run, and where we reran a request the caption says so. The full request text sits under each pair.

BeforeAI-drawn sample: the rear of a plain red full-size pickup with a flat tailgate in a driveway
AfterAI-drawn sample: the same tailgate wrapped with a mountain sunset print
Modification Goals: "Wrap only the tailgate in a printed vinyl tailgate wrap showing a mountain landscape at sunset with dark pine tree silhouettes against an orange and purple sky, covering the whole flat face of the tailgate; keep the red paint on the rest of the truck, the taillights, bumper, handle and background the same". Followed: the tailgate face now shows an orange and purple sunset over mountains with dark pine silhouettes, and the red paint around it, the taillights, handle, bumper and driveway look the same. Differences to know about: the print stops cleanly at the tailgate edges, as asked. A real print would be cut around the handle the same way. Extra changes: none that we could see.
BeforeAI-drawn sample: the rear of a plain silver mid-size pickup on a gravel lot
AfterAI-drawn sample: the same tailgate wrapped matte black with gray contour lines
Modification Goals: "Wrap only the tailgate in a matte black vinyl tailgate wrap with a big gray topographic map line pattern across the whole flat face of the tailgate; keep the silver paint on the rest of the truck, the taillights, bumper, handle and background the same". Followed: the tailgate face is now matte black with gray contour lines, and the silver bed sides, taillights, bumper and gravel lot look the same. Differences to know about: this is our second example truck and the second of two runs on it. On a gray truck seen from a rear three-quarter angle, the wrap spread onto the bed side and rear fender in three tries, so we switched to a straight rear view, where it stayed on the tailgate. The other run on this photo cropped the frame tighter. The lines swirl more than a real topo map. Extra changes: none that we could see in this run.

All before and after images are AI-drawn samples from our own image model, not photos of real customer vehicles. The vehicles are plain generic models with no plate text. Under each pair we list which parts of the request worked, which did not, and any change we never asked for.

What a tailgate wrap is

A tailgate wrap is one printed vinyl panel, usually with a clear laminate, sized to the outer face of the tailgate. It is one of the cheapest ways to add art to a truck, and it peels off later without touching the paint.

The vehicles below are AI-drawn generic models, not photos of real customer vehicles, and no vehicle maker, wrap maker or wheel maker is affiliated with this page.

Popular tailgate wrap designs

Landscapes

Mountains, sunsets, forests and lakes, like our red truck.

Topo and line art

Contour lines or simple graphics on a dark base, like our silver truck.

Flags

The US flag or a state flag, clean or distressed.

Camo and hunting scenes

Camo patterns, deer, ducks or fishing scenes.

Blackout and text

A matte black panel, or a short name or slogan you add yourself.

How to preview a tailgate wrap

  1. 1

    Take a straight rear photo

Stand behind the truck at eye level; a side angle makes the AI spill the wrap onto the bed.

  2. 2

    Open the Modifications tool

Upload the photo and switch to Custom Vision.

  3. 3

    Describe the print

Name the scene or pattern, its colors and say it covers only the flat face of the tailgate.

  4. 4

    Say what stays

List the paint on the rest of the truck, the taillights, handle and bumper, and rerun if the bed side changes.

Two Modification Goals to paste

We used these requests for the examples. Copy one into Modification Goals and change the color or part words for your own vehicle. Swap in your own scene, such as a lake at dawn or a desert canyon.

  • Wrap only the tailgate in a printed vinyl tailgate wrap showing a mountain landscape at sunset with dark pine tree silhouettes against an orange and purple sky, covering the whole flat face of the tailgate; keep the red paint on the rest of the truck, the taillights, bumper, handle and background the same
  • Wrap only the tailgate in a matte black vinyl tailgate wrap with a big gray topographic map line pattern across the whole flat face of the tailgate; keep the silver paint on the rest of the truck, the taillights, bumper, handle and background the same

What the AI does well and where it slips

The model draws detailed scenes on a straight-on tailgate and keeps the edges clean. From a rear three-quarter angle it kept spreading the wrap onto the bed side, even when we named the panels to leave alone. Use a straight rear photo, and treat any lettering in a render as a placeholder.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a tailgate wrap cost?

It depends on size and design. In one sign-shop forum thread, shops put tailgate accent wraps at roughly $200 to $400, and one shop described a $299 package. Ask local shops for a quote with your design.

Do I need to remove the handle or camera?

Shops either cut the vinyl around the handle, badges and backup camera or take some trim off first. The camera lens must never be covered.

Can I put my own photo or text on it?

Yes. Print shops can print most images if they are large enough. Send the highest resolution file you have and ask for a proof.

Will a tailgate wrap damage my paint?

Good cast vinyl on factory paint usually peels off cleanly within its rated life. Very old or sun-baked vinyl, or repainted panels, can leave glue or lift paint.

Can I wrap the tailgate on a leased truck?

Often yes, since the wrap can come off, but check your lease terms first and keep the original paint in good shape.

Can I preview a tailgate wrap on my own car for free?

Yes. Sign in with email or Google, upload a photo of your car in the Modifications tool and paste a goal like the ones below into Modification Goals in Custom Vision. Most new accounts get 5 free credits that last 30 days, and a standard render uses 1 credit. Free renders carry a WheelAI watermark.
