Before and after examples

Each pair is one vehicle photo and the same photo after one Modification Goals request, sent through the same image model, step count and request wording that Custom Vision uses. Each after-image is a single run. The red truck's before photo was cleaned with the same model to remove a brand-style tailgate badge; the silver truck's before photo was not cleaned and still shows faint unreadable lettering on the front door. The full request text sits under each pair.

BeforeAI-drawn sample: a red regular cab pickup truck with an open empty bed, seen from a rear corner on a suburban street
AfterAI-drawn sample: the same pickup with a one-piece hard tonneau cover painted red over the bed
Red generic pickup stand-in. Modification Goals: "Add a one-piece hard tonneau cover painted the same red as the truck that covers the whole truck bed in one smooth panel; change ONLY the top of the bed. Keep the paint, wheels, tailgate, windows, street and the camera angle exactly the same". Followed: one smooth red panel now covers the top of the bed, and the paint, wheels, tailgate, windows and street look the same. Differences to know about: the cover shows no hinges, struts or seams, so it reads as a generic painted one-piece cover, not a specific product. Extra changes: none that we could see.
BeforeAI-drawn sample: a silver crew cab pickup truck with an open empty bed, seen straight from the side on a suburban street
AfterAI-drawn sample: the same pickup with a black soft tonneau cover lying flat on the bed rails
Silver generic crew cab stand-in, seen from the side. Modification Goals: "Add a black soft roll-up tonneau cover that lies flat on top of the bed rails and covers only the top of the truck bed; change ONLY the top of the bed. Keep the paint, wheels, tailgate, windows, street and the camera angle exactly the same". Followed: a flat black soft cover now runs along the top of the bed rails from the cab to the tailgate, and the paint, wheels, windows and street look the same. Differences to know about: from this low side angle you only see the edge of the cover, not the roll-up rails or the fabric texture. Extra changes: none that we could see.

All before and after images are AI-drawn samples from our own image model, not photos of real customer vehicles. The vehicles are plain generic models with blank plates. Under each pair we list which parts of the request worked, which did not, and any change we never asked for.

See a tonneau cover on your own truck first

A bed cover changes the whole side profile of a pickup, and a cover that looks good on a store photo can look different on your paint and bed length. WheelAI redraws a photo of your own truck with the cover you describe, so you can compare a black fabric cover with a painted hard one before you buy.

The example vehicles below are AI-drawn generic vehicles, not photos of real customer vehicles, and no vehicle maker or parts maker is affiliated with this page.

How to preview a tonneau cover

There is no special mode for this part. The Modifications tool edits any vehicle photo, and its Custom Vision mode takes your own wording.

  1. 1

Take a side or rear corner photo

Stand a few steps back with the whole bed in the frame. A side photo at about bed-rail height worked best in our tests.

  2. 2

    Open the Modifications tool

Upload your photo and switch to Custom Vision.

  3. 3

Describe the cover and what stays

Say the cover type and color, that it covers only the top of the bed, and list what must not change: paint, wheels, tailgate, windows and background.

  4. 4

    Compare and refine

Look at the result next to your original photo, check the tailgate, and rerun if the cover spilled over it.

Cover types you can describe

Soft roll-up

Fabric over a frame that rolls up toward the cab. A low, flat black look.

Soft or hard folding

Panels that fold in thirds or quarters toward the cab. Hard panels give a flatter, more solid top.

Retractable

Slats that slide into a canister near the cab, so the bed can be opened partway.

Painted one-piece

A single hard lid, usually on struts, painted to your truck's color for a smooth look like our red example.

What a picture cannot tell you

A render shows whether you like the look. Before you buy a cover, ask about the following.

  • The exact fit for your make, model, year and bed length.
  • Whether it locks: fabric covers can be cut, while many hard covers lock with the tailgate.
  • How you will haul tall loads, since a folding or one-piece cover has to be opened or removed first.
  • Whether a bed rack, toolbox or bed liner on your truck changes what fits.
  • For a painted cover, the paint code it is matched to.

Two Modification Goals to paste

We used these requests for the examples. Copy one into Modification Goals, swap the cover type, color and background words for your own, and delete anything that does not apply.

  • Add a one-piece hard tonneau cover painted the same red as the truck that covers the whole truck bed in one smooth panel; change ONLY the top of the bed. Keep the paint, wheels, tailgate, windows, street and the camera angle exactly the same
  • Add a black soft roll-up tonneau cover that lies flat on top of the bed rails and covers only the top of the truck bed; change ONLY the top of the bed. Keep the paint, wheels, tailgate, windows, street and the camera angle exactly the same

What the AI does well and where it slips

Flat covers seen from the side or a high rear corner come out clean: the cover sits on the bed rails and the truck stays the same. The weak spot is the tailgate. In two rear-corner photos the model drew the cover down over the tailgate on both runs, so we left those examples out. Fine details such as rails, hinges and fold lines usually do not show.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free tonneau cover visualizer that uses my own truck photo?

Yes. Sign in with email or Google, upload a photo of your pickup, and describe the cover in the Modification Goals box. Most new accounts get 5 free credits that last 30 days, and a standard render uses 1 credit. Free renders carry a WheelAI watermark. It edits your own picture rather than a 3D model of a stock truck.

Which cover types can I try?

Any type you can describe: soft roll-up, soft tri-fold, hard tri-fold or quad-fold, hard roll-up, retractable, or a one-piece hard cover painted to match. Our examples show a painted one-piece cover and a black soft roll-up cover.

Can it show the cover half open or folded up?

You can ask for it, but we only tested closed covers. The render is a single still image, so it cannot show how a cover rolls, folds or slides.

What photo works best?

A side view or a rear corner view taken from slightly above the bed rails, with the whole bed in the frame. In our tests a straight side photo kept the tailgate unchanged, while two rear-corner photos had the cover drawn down over the tailgate, which a real cover does not do.

Will the cover fit my truck?

The render cannot tell you. Covers are sold for a specific make, model, year and bed length, and bed racks, toolboxes and some bed liners change what fits. Ask the seller about your truck.

What if the AI changes something I did not ask for?

It can. The image model redraws the whole photo. In two of our test photos it drew the cover down over the tailgate, so we left those out. In the two shown here the paint, wheels and background stayed the same. Compare the result with your original and rerun if something changed.

Does the render show which brand or model of cover to buy?

No. It shows a look only. It cannot show how a cover locks, how well it seals against rain, or how it is mounted. Ask the seller or an installer.

Ready to see a cover on your truck?

Try a fabric cover and a painted hard cover on the same photo, then ask the seller about fit for your bed length.
