Truck Snorkel: See an Off-Road Snorkel on Your Own Truck
A snorkel moves your engine's air intake up the windshield pillar, away from water and dust near the ground. See a black snorkel on a tan pickup and a white off-road SUV, then upload a photo of your truck and see how the tube looks on your fender and pillar before you buy one.

Two 4x4s, stock intake to snorkel
Each pair is one AI-drawn before photo and that photo after one Modification Goals request, sent through the same image model, step count and request wording that Custom Vision uses. Each after-image is a single run, and where we reran a request the caption says so. The full request text sits under each pair.

All before and after images are AI-drawn samples from our own image model, not photos of real customer vehicles. The vehicles are plain generic models with no plate text. Under each pair we list which parts of the request worked, which did not, and any change we never asked for.
What a truck snorkel is
A snorkel is a raised air intake. A tube runs from the engine's air box out through the front fender and up the windshield pillar, and ends in an intake head near the roofline. It lets the engine breathe from higher up, so water in a deep crossing is less likely to be sucked in, and the air in dusty conditions is usually cleaner than the air near the wheels. A snorkel alone does not make a truck waterproof: breathers, electrics and seals matter too.
The vehicles below are AI-drawn generic models, not photos of real customer vehicles, and no vehicle maker or parts maker is affiliated with this page.
Snorkel choices people make
Black tube
The most common look, like both of our examples.
Body-color tube
Painted to match, for a quieter look.
Forward-facing ram head
Faces the wind to push air in, for water and general use.
Rear-facing head
Faces back to keep rain and dust out, popular for desert driving.
Pillar side
Most run on one front pillar; check which side your truck's air box is on.
How to preview a truck snorkel
- 1
Take a clear photo
A straight side view of the side where the snorkel will go shows the fender and pillar.
- 2
Open the Modifications tool
Upload the photo and switch to Custom Vision.
- 3
Describe the change
Say a black or body-color snorkel tube up the front fender and windshield pillar, and which way the head faces.
- 4
Say what stays
Say the paint, wheels and windows stay the same, and rerun if the tube is broken into pieces.
Two Modification Goals to paste
We used these requests for the examples. Copy one into Modification Goals and change the part words for your own vehicle. Swap the black tube for body color, or a forward head for a rear-facing one, to compare.
- add a black off-road snorkel: a raised air intake tube that runs up the front fender nearest the camera and along the windshield pillar nearest the camera to above the roofline, with an air ram head facing forward; keep the same truck, paint, wheels and background
- add a black off-road snorkel: a raised air intake tube that runs up the front fender nearest the camera and along the windshield pillar nearest the camera to roof height, with an air ram head facing forward; keep the same SUV, paint, wheels and background
What the AI does well and where it slips
The model adds a tube on the windshield pillar and keeps the truck, the paint and the scene. It often breaks the snorkel into pieces or starts it at the hood edge instead of the fender, so read the render as a look check, not a routing plan. Real snorkels are made for one model and need a hole cut in the fender, so check the kit for your truck.
Frequently asked questions
What does a snorkel do on a truck?
It raises the engine's air intake to roof height, so water in a crossing or dust near the ground is less likely to get into the engine.
Does a snorkel make my truck waterproof?
No. It protects the air intake only. Deep water can still reach breathers, electrics and seals, so a deep crossing needs more preparation than a snorkel.
Do I need to cut my fender for a snorkel?
Most kits need a hole cut in the front fender for the tube. Check the kit's instructions for your model before you buy.
Does a snorkel add power?
Claims vary. Its main job is a higher and often cleaner air source, not more power.
Which side does a snorkel go on?
It usually goes on the side where the air box sits. Kits are made for one model, so check yours.
Can I preview a snorkel on my own car for free?
Yes. Sign in with email or Google, upload a photo of your car in the Modifications tool and paste a goal like the ones below into Modification Goals in Custom Vision. Most new accounts get 5 free credits that last 30 days, and a standard render uses 1 credit. Free renders carry a WheelAI watermark.
