Race Car Livery Design: Try a Livery on a Photo of Your Car

A race car livery is the full graphic scheme on a car: base color, stripes, color blocks and a race number. Describe a livery in words and see it on a photo of your own car, so you can try ideas before you pay a designer or a wrap shop.

Two cars, plain paint to race livery

Each pair is one AI-drawn before photo and that photo after one Modification Goals request, sent through the same image model, step count and request wording that Custom Vision uses. Each after-image is a single run, and where we reran a request the caption says so. The full request text sits under each pair.

BeforeAI-drawn sample: a plain white compact sedan at a racetrack paddock, rear three-quarter view
AfterAI-drawn sample: the same sedan in a blue, red and white striped livery with race number 27
Modification Goals: "Give the car a race car livery: a bold white, blue and red design with wide diagonal blue and red stripes sweeping along the sides and a large black race number 27 in a white circle on the front door; no sponsor logos and no brand names; keep the wheels, windows and background the same". Followed: bold blue, red and white diagonal stripes now cover the sides, roof edge and rear, a black 27 in a white circle sits on the side, there are no sponsor logos, and the wheels, windows and paddock look the same. Differences to know about: the number landed on the rear door and quarter panel, not the front door we asked for, and a few small unreadable marks appeared above it. Extra changes: the stripes also spread across the trunk and rear bumper.
BeforeAI-drawn sample: a plain light gray two-door sports coupe in a racetrack pit lane
AfterAI-drawn sample: the same coupe in an orange and black livery with race number 8
Modification Goals: "Give the car a race car livery: a light gray base with a big orange and black geometric livery across the hood and sides and a large white race number 8 on the door; no sponsor logos and no brand names; keep the wheels, windows and background the same". Followed: an orange and black design now covers the hood and sides, a large number 8 sits on the door, there are no sponsor logos, and the wheels, windows and pit lane look the same. Differences to know about: the pattern came out as flowing, camouflage-like orange and black shapes rather than geometric blocks, the light gray base is almost fully covered in orange, and the number is black on a white panel instead of white. Extra changes: none beyond the livery that we could see.

All before and after images are AI-drawn samples from our own image model, not photos of real customer vehicles. The vehicles are plain generic models with no plate text. Under each pair we list which parts of the request worked, which did not, and any change we never asked for.

What a race car livery is

A livery is the graphic scheme on a race car: base color, stripes, gradients, number panels and sponsor space. On track it makes a car easy to spot at speed and from the stands. Today most liveries are vinyl wraps, because a wrap is cheaper to change than paint.

Our examples leave out sponsor logos and brand names on purpose. The cars below are AI-drawn generic models, not photos of real customer vehicles, and no vehicle maker or paint maker is affiliated with this page.

Parts of a livery to describe

Base color

The main body color, often white, gray or black so the graphics pop.

Stripes and blocks

Diagonal stripes, color blocks or a geometric pattern across the hood and sides.

Race number

A big number in a contrasting circle or panel on the door or hood.

Color count

Two or three colors read best from a distance.

Open space

Leave plain panels if you plan to add your own decals later.

How to preview a livery on your car

  1. 1

Take a side or three-quarter photo

The doors and hood carry most of a livery, so show them.

  2. 2

    Open the Modifications tool

Upload the photo and switch to Custom Vision.

  3. 3

    Describe colors, shapes and number

Name two or three colors, the stripe or block shape, and the number and where it goes.

  4. 4

    Rerun and compare

Livery results vary run to run, so try two or three and keep the best.

Two Modification Goals to paste

We used these requests for the examples. Copy one into Modification Goals and change the color or part words for your own car. Ask for no sponsor logos and no brand names, as we did, so the model does not invent fake ones.

  • Give the car a race car livery: a bold white, blue and red design with wide diagonal blue and red stripes sweeping along the sides and a large black race number 27 in a white circle on the front door; no sponsor logos and no brand names; keep the wheels, windows and background the same
  • Give the car a race car livery: a light gray base with a big orange and black geometric livery across the hood and sides and a large white race number 8 on the door; no sponsor logos and no brand names; keep the wheels, windows and background the same

What the AI does well and where it slips

The model is good at bold color and big stripes. It is loose with placement: numbers drift to another panel, small fake text can appear, and a geometric request can come back as camouflage. Treat a render as a mood board for a designer, not a print-ready file.

Frequently asked questions

What is a race car livery?

The full graphic scheme on a race car: colors, stripes, number panels and sponsor space.

Is a livery painted or wrapped?

Most are vinyl wraps now, because a wrap is cheaper to change between seasons and protects the paint underneath.

How is a livery designed?

Design studios describe a brief, a vehicle template, a 3D render, then print and cut files. A quick preview on a photo helps you settle colors before that work starts.

Where do the number and sponsor panels go?

One livery design studio puts main sponsors on the doors and hood and smaller ones near the wheel arches and lower sides. Numbers usually go on the doors, and often on the hood or roof too.

How long does a livery wrap last?

Wrap shops quote about 3 to 7 years for vinyl with proper care, depending on film grade and sun.

Can I drive a racing livery on the street?

Usually, but one wrap shop advises checking your local vehicle rules first, especially for a full color change or reflective film.

Can I preview a race livery on my own car for free?

Yes. Sign in with email or Google, upload a photo of your car in the Modifications tool and paste a goal like the ones below into Modification Goals in Custom Vision. Most new accounts get 5 free credits that last 30 days, and a standard render uses 1 credit. Free renders carry a WheelAI watermark.
